The Universal / Donkey Rides a Penny a Glass

Released: 28 June 1968

Label: Immediate IM 069

Highest Chart Position: 16

The Universal was the final authorised single by the Small Faces. It was recorded primarily in the garden of Steve Marriott's home in Marlow. His dogs are clearly audible on the track. The song was originally called Hello The Universal but the change was due to a printing error that would have been too costly to correct. The song was finished in the studio but, apparently, without all of the band playing.

It has been suggested that the song was not representative of the Small Faces but more the way in which Steve Marriott's writing was heading. This may be then more of an indication of what was to come later with Humble Pie.
