Small Faces Convention 2002
29th September 2002, Ruskin Arms, East London. As ever the Ruskin Arms was packed for the 2002 Small Faces Convention. John Hellier and Dean Powell had put together a fine evening of entertainment that included convention favourites and newcomers. Dan's People were playing their first gig. Keith Smart is another Convention regular whose set tends more towards solo Ronnie Lane material. Debris and How Come have been noted as standing out. (Sorry I missed these first two acts). Afterglow were joined at the end by Steve Ellis of Love Affair for Afterglow (Of Your Love). Again I missed most of the set but was fortunate to witness Afterglow at the recent Weller Weekend in Woking. Small World interrupted a world tour (of Madrid and Japan) to play the convention. This was the first time I had seen them and was impressed. The highlight of the set was Tin Soldier that worked well with the acoustic guitar. Convention regulars 17 Black closed the evening. As last year they were joined by Dean Rees on keyboards. Clem Clempson of Humble Pie joined for Wham Bam Thank You Mam and What'Cha Gonna Do About It as well as the Humble Pie tracks Black Coffee (with Mollie Marriott) and Natural Born Bugie with Simon Hickling.
