**** A highly enjoyable tribute to a true
legend.
What better way to launch a new Small
Faces-related label than the full memorial gig for Steve Marriott?
Especially when the stellar line-up includes the likes of Ian McLagan,
Humble Pie (with both Peter Frampton and Clem Clempson in the line-up),
Kenney Jones (also featured in a 33-minute interview with Wapping Wharf
fanzine editor and concert MC John Hellier at the end of disc 3), Rick
Wills, Rabbitt Bundrick, Zak Starkey, Paul Weller...and other too numerous
to mention. It's a measure of the love and respect Marriott inspired in his
contemporaries and fans that this concert not only happened at all, but was
obviously such a damn good and successful night. Nobody sounds
under-rehearsed, in fact everyone sounds like this was what they did every
night!
The songs span the man's career - sure there
are some of the obvious choices, but also some of the lesser tracks such as
30 Days in the Hole - which features both Toby and Mollie Marriott,
incidentally. And from the first note (17 Black performing Don't Burst My
Bubble) to the last (The All-Star band roaring through All or Nothing)
it's a blast. They certainly did the ol' tosser proud. |
