Station
Hotel, Richmond
The Station Hotel is at 1 Kew Road Richmond, directly opposite Richmond
railway station. The Crawdaddy Club started here and became famous as the place
where the Rolling Stones played a residency and when they finished they
were replaced with the Yardbirds. Due to the success of the
Stones, however, the Crawdaddy later moved to Richmond Athletic Ground a
few months later. As far as the Small Faces are concerned,
they never played here as the Crawdaddy closed before the Small Faces
were formed. Nevertheless, a plaque above the door of the Bull &
Bush proudly proclaimed that the Small Faces did play there. There is a connection though. The young
Ian McLagan used to visit Richmond from his nearby home in Hounslow to
go to the Crawdaddy. Here he became turned on to the Rolling Stones,
little knowing that some years later he would be playing keyboards with
them. He also played the Crawdaddy Club with his first band the
Muleskinners. The photograph show the venue towards the
end of 1999 when it was called the Bull and Bush. Edwards sports bar opened during
2000 and represented a destruction of the heritage associated with it.
Very sad.
Most recently the venue has been called One Kew Road. [ The
