Check out the Hiwatts

If you are down in the south then it is worthwhile checking out a great band from Southampton called The Hiwatts. At the end of January 2007, the band played at The Thomas Tripp Late & Live in Christchurch and delivered an excellent set. The band does have its own songs but in Christchurch it was a covers set, highlighting some of the best British music of the last few decades. Well in my opinion this was the case. This was a live version of my record collection!

The first set opened with Ocean Colour Scene’s You Got It Bad which quickly went into the Undertones’ Teenage Kicks. Most of the tracks were taken from the two high points of British music, the mid to late 1960s and the late 1970s.

The Who was the best represented band with Pinball Wizard being a particular highlight. Some of the tracks played had been covered by the Who such as Heatwave, Good Loving and Summertime Blues and these were played in the style in which the Who had recorded them. Eddie Holland’s Leaving Here, a personal favourite, was closer to the The Birds’ version with its power chords.

The Hiwatts only played one Small Faces song although they often include two others. Sha La La La Lee lived up to its reputation as a great song to play live. A couple of other “Mod” classics were The Capitols’ Cool Jerk, played in much of the style of the Creation and Tommy Tucker’s High Heel Sneekers.

Back to the present day, almost, with Primal Scream’s Rocks while the mid-period was represented with Buzzcocks, the Jam and The Sex Pistols’ Pretty Vacant.
