The Small Fakers Denmark Street, London. 6 June 2020 Missing your Small Fakers fix? Thanks to technology and those lovely people at Denmark Street Studios, top Small Faces tribute band the Small Fakers appeared live around the world and elsewhere. Maintaining social distancing they ran through a selection of Small Faces hits, b-sides and album tracks. Despite a couple of technical hitches it was a great evening with the band on fine form despite the lack of recent gigging opportunities. There was almost an Old Grey Whistle Test atmosphere as the live show lacked an audience. However, this was a Small Fakers gig and the bar was busy, well the side-bar with plenty of chatter although most seemed to relate to Dan's shirts! The set covers the whole career of the Fab Four and generally in chronological order. The first two hits (first and third singles) usually kicks off the evening though it was a shame that I've Got Mine was dropped as the Fakers' version is so good. Still you can't play everything. The Small Faces included quite a few instrumentals and so do the Small Fakers with b-sides Grow Your Own and Almost Grown alongside album track Happy Boys Happy. on Gray channels his inner Ian McLagan who channelled his inner Booker T Jones. A highlight to finish the first set was You Need Loving. This Small Faces favourite will be instantly recognisable to Led Zeppelin fans as a significant influence on Whole Lotta Love although Steve Marriott would happily acknowledge that he borrowed the lines from Willie Dixon's You Need Love. The second set represented the Immediate career of the band. This included tracks from the first Immediate album and Ogden's Nut Gone Flake as well as the well-known hits. I'm Only Dreaming is always a popular choice and the inclusion of the superb Don't Burst My Bubble was a particular highlight. This is a somewhat hidden Small Faces song but one which is one of their best. An encore was always going to happen and Tin Soldier certainly never disappoints. The technical issues aside this was a wonderful evening which keeps music live. Let's hope they can do it again soon, maybe with a couple of Veras tracks added. Thanks Matt, Neil, Jon and Dan.
