The Beatles- 1 |
||
|
The greatest CD ever released? 1 brings together all the Beatles?number one singles in the USA and UK. However, there will always be contention about what should be included. To a UK listener there are tracks missing and tracks included that did not make number one. Love Me Do, for example, only made 17 in the UK while The Long & Winding Road, Eight Days a Week and Yesterday were not released as singles while the band was together. Totally and utterly unforgivable is the exclusion of Strawberry Fields Forever, arguably the greatest single of all time. This was a double A-side with Penny Lane which is included. Strawberry Fields Forever may have been omitted to save space and ensure that only one CD was needed. Interestingly, the double A-side only reached number two in the UK, kept off the top spot by Englebert Humperdink’s Please Release Me. Yes, it is hard to believe! Also, Please, Please Me is excluded and is seen by many to have been the band's first number one, even the Anthology book states so. However, what 1 does provide is an uninterrupted journey through the 1960s thanks to the Beatles. This is the first time that all the Beatles' singles have been available on a single CD (the above exclusion excepted). It is a near impossible task to compile a single CD as the best of the Beatles and there will always be arguments about what should be included. Furthermore, there is nothing new here. Simply it is some of the best tracks on a single CD. This should become a best-selling CD, if not the best-selling of all time but the Red and Blue albums between them represent a more comprehensive Best of the Beatles. One thing is certain though. The Beatles packed an outstanding amount of quality music into a relatively short period and just think what isn’t even included! Released: 2000 EMI/Capitol/ParlophoneEssential Tracks:
