British Beat Groups of the 1960s

Book Review: Driving in Diverse- A Collective Profile of Jethro Tull

May 2000

Barbara Espinoza has compiled a true fan's view of Jethro Tull. This is a piece of work that has involved extensive research, based on what is already available and new interviews undertaken by Barbara, often in her role on public access radio where she has interviewed a number of band members.

The book is aimed at not just the hard core Tull fan but also those, like myself, who enjoy the music but know relatively little about the group. Ian Anderson once said that Jethro Tull was the biggest cult band in the world, you may have heard of them but maybe not. Remember Jethro Tull is still recording and touring, albeit with only the one core original member, and has been doing so non-stop since the mid to late 1960s.

During that time the band has had a number of single hits and highly successful albums. It has seen different musical "fads" and survived them all. The book provides a chronological history of the band that is adequate for the Tull novice but, probably, unnecessary for the ardent fan.

The research undertaken by Barbara Espinoza will be of interest to both the novices and ardent fans. With some help she undertakes a dissection of some tracks on Tull albums. This is interesting as the songs are often complex and the analysis aids their understanding. The interviews with different band members are also of great interest. This band had as many members as Spinal Tap!

The book concludes with a glossary of further information sources about Jethro Tull where those who are keener listeners can go for further enlightenment.
