Book Review: 100 Best Album Covers by Storm Thorgeson and Aubrey Powell |
December 1999 |
Anyone who has read a Dorling Kindersley book before will know what a treat they
are to open. Their consistent style acts as a guarantee that you will enjoy
reading them. 100 Best Album Covers is no exception to this.
OK, we would not all have chosen the same 100 covers but that doesn't really matter. the start of the book offers the criteria for selection in an attempt to justify the choices made. Some of these albums I have never even heard of. My own personal favourite is included though. I still rate Never Mind The Bollocks as not only a great album but also a wonderful cover. It's some way from the normal Making Time area of interest but not really. Albums of particular interest to Making Time readers that are covered in the book are Blind Faith's debut, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Sergeant Pepper and Their Satanic Majesties Request. We could easily make a case for a number of others such as The Who Sell Out, 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion and Disraeli Gears. The authors are designers and this shows in the way the covers and the stories behind them are dissected. Sergeant Pepper has had this treatment on many occasions but it's good to see it applied to other, possibly more innovative and interesting, covers. The Small Faces entry is particularly important as it was originally produced in a circular sleeve in the shape of a tobacco tin. mp, November 1999 |
