Book Review: The Hendrix Experience by Mitch Mitchell & John Platt |
December 2000 |
This is an easy to read book that chart's Mitch
Mitchell's life with Jimi Hendrix in The Experience. It starts with Mitchell's
early days and goes through making the albums, the touring and the festivals
such as Monterey and Woodstock. As such the book carries a lot of weight as
Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding were the two people closest to Hendrix and
helped to create the unique sound that was the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Mitch Mitchell had been one of top session players and had also been playing with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames when he was invited to meet Jimi Hendrix. there is some insight into the problem the band faced, especially in America, where a black musician playing with two white guys was not accepted in some areas. there was also some friction between Jimi and Noel. Jimi was an excellent bass player while Noel was really a guitarist (and later moved back to guitar with Fat Mattress.) One of the best things about this book is the quantity of colour and black and white photographs and pictures of gig posters and announcements. The Experience had a very singular and powerful look and this is well-captured in the illustrations. mp, November 2000 |
