British Beat Groups of the 1960s
Book Review: Q Rock Stars Encyclopedia by Dafydd Rees and Luke Crampton |
January 2000 |
There appear to be two versions of this book, one for the UK and one for the US
market. Both books are published by Dorling Kindersley but are endorsed by
different "sponsors." The UK version reviewed carries the name of Q,
one of the country's leading monthly music magazines. The US version is endorsed
by the TV channel VH-1. The reviewed edition of the book is the UK version and
it is not known, at this stage, if the books' content is the same.
Q Encyclopedia of Rock Stars was first published in 1996 and this is the first update. The book works in diary format, describing the careers of top bands in a chronological, date-driven order. For the enthusiast of different bands this will not provide the same level of detail as books such as The Small Faces Quite Naturally, Barry Miles' Beatles diary or the Rolling Stones Good Times Bad Times, the first and third of which have already been covered by Making Time. However, Q Rock Stars Encyclopedia covers a wider range of bands from different decades. The diary dates cover such times as record releases with chart placings, key gig dates and members joining or leaving. This allows the bands to covered in a reasonable level of detail. A useful book for your reference shelf. mp, December 1999 |
